　　Origion
　　Sanya is named Sanya because two rivers had being conversaged ,just like "Y". Historically Sanya was called Yazhou in ancient times with a recorded long-lasting history. In March 1992 archeologists discovered the 10-thousand-year human relics of Sanya at Luobi Cave, which brings forward the human history of Sanya to two to three more thousand years.　
　　History
　　As early as in Qin Dynasty three counties were set under jurisdiction of the central government, Yazhou, or called Xiangjun was one of which. Han Dynasty established Zhuya County, Sui Dynasty set Linzhen and Tang Dynasty changed it to Zhenzhou for today’s Sanya. By Song Dynasty Sanya had become the southernmost county of China. As Sanya lies remote from the mainland and the central government, it has long been called “the end of the earth” since old times. The prime ministers Han Yuan and dignitary monk Jian Zhen of Tang Dynasty, the famous prime minister Zhao Ding, minister Hu Quan and the weaver Huang Daopo of Song Dynasty have all stepped feet in Sanya, who has made great contributions to the development of regional economy and cultural exchanges.
Yaxian County was liberated in April 1950, and the county government was established. In October 1954 the administration of CPC Yaxian Committee was relocated from Yacheng to Sanya. In 1958 Yaxian was emerged with Baoting, Lingshui, Niulou and Xinglong of Wanning to become a big county, which were separated in 1959 and 1961 to set Baoting and Lingshui while Yaxian County remained its current prefecture. Approved by the State Council of China,
Yaxian was upgraded to Sanya City on September 26, 1987. On December 30 on the same year, Sanya City was officially named and performed accordingly.
　　Minority
　　In Sanya there are 20 nationalities living in compact communities. Li Minority is the original settler on Hainan Island with a population of 1.14 million, moved to Hainan over 3000 years ago from the Chinese mainland.Li people are good at singing and dancing.Featuerd entertainment includes nose fluting ,tree leave fluting and bamboo beating ect. Miao and Li people share the common ancestor – Chiyou tribes from the east and the south were posted from Guangxi to Hainan Island to safeguard the frontier during Jiajing and Wanli Times of Ming Dynasty. The soldiers, when retreated they remained on the island and evolved into today’s Miao people. Miao people boast a history of over 400 years on this island, with a population of about 60000. Li and Miao share the same traditional festive day, the Lunar March 3. Hui Minority was called Hui people in ancient times, all are Muslim and believe in Islam.

　　Sanya’s public language is Putonghua or mandarin, the local language is Hainan dialect. As Hainan in history was once a county of Guangdong Province, some locals can speak Cantonese. Besides, Sanya’s minorities have their own ethnic languages, such as Jun, Mai, Li, Huihui, Danzhou and Danjia etc.
　　As a tourist destination, English is widely spoken at such occasions as star hotels, high-profile locations and scenic spots. Signage in Chinese and English are put up on in such locations. Due to various sources of guests, Sanya also provide such language service as Russian, Japanese, Korean etc. But of you want to “do as the Romans”, mastering some basic Chinese is absolutely necessary. 　　Sanya’s primary religion has has Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity and Islamism.Buddhism . Buddhism in Nanshan Culture Tourist Park. has most influence.The Christianity church is located New People Street in the Red Sha Town. There are 6 Mosques in the Phoenix Town.
